Devil May Cry 5 is out Friday for PC, Xbox and PS4, the first storyline entry in the series since 2008's Devil May Cry 4 (we're excluding the 2013 reboot here), bringing Nero and Dante into a new decade. We all want as much devils and crying as we can get, so it's natural to wonder: just how long is the action-adventure epic campaign of Devil May Cry 5?

How Long Is Devil May Cry 5?

There are 20 missions in Devil May Cry 5. Missions are of varying length. Some, especially the early ones, can be torn through in roughly 20-30 minutes. Many were more like 40 minutes. Most, if not all, took less than an hour. If we're doing napkin math, that gets us to 10-14 hours. Kotaku pegged their playthrough at 14 hours. IGN's playthrough was 10-12 hours.

But we found extra hours of gameplay everywhere. Mission environments have secret tunnels and rooms and there's lots of incentive to hunt down Red, Blue, Purple and Gold Orbs, not to mention the Secret Missions, which have challenges that you can replay from the Main Menu.

Devil May Cry 5 is an embarrassment of riches, particularly with its three playable characters. In addition to Nero and Dante, DMC 5 adds V, a character whose indirect attacks are based on animal familiars and misdirection. Each is perfectly balanced and completely different from the other two. We spent a lot of time outside of the campaign, just mastering combos in The Void: the in-game training mode.

There's lots of ways that the game encourages replayability, including higher difficulties like Dante Must Die. More than a single campaign experience, Devil May Cry 5 is a game about mastery. While the campaign alone hovers around 13-15 hours, there's likely double that in post-campaign content.

Plus, like free DLC released for their Resident Evil 2 remake, Capcom has already announced DLC for Devil May Cry 5: a return of the Bloody Palace mode that's long been a series staple. In Bloody Palace, players face waves of enemies and bosses. In previous entries, Bloody Palace mode has had over a hundred, sometimes thousands, of levels. The Bloody Palace DLC is expected in April, so there should be more details soon.

Devil May Cry 5 is a great game for anyone looking for action, but especially for the kind of player who relishes 100 percent completion.

Devil May Cry 5 is available now for PS4, Xbox and PC.
