He is best known for his roles in the films The Butterfly Effect (2004), The Last Kiss (2006), and The Nanny Diaries (2007). Backus began his career in the early 2000s, appearing in a number of television shows and films. He made his feature film debut in the 2004 drama The Butterfly Effect, starring Ashton Kutcher. He went on to appear in the 2006 romantic comedy The Last Kiss, starring Zach Braff, and the 2007 comedy The Nanny Diaries, starring Scarlett Johansson. In addition to acting, Backus has also directed and written a number of short films. He wrote and directed the short film The Last Day of Summer (2009), which won the Best Short Film award at the 2009 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival.
